Aaron Rodgers Contemplates Future with Jets for 2025 Season
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is contemplating whether to continue his storied career in 2025, expressing a preference to remain with the New York Jets if he decides to play. The four-time MVP addressed his future during his Tuesday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," amidst speculation that he might leave New York or face a potential benching or release by the season's end.
"I don't even know if I want to play yet, but New York would be my first option," Rodgers said, discussing his plans for next season.
Rodgers, who will turn 41 next Monday, mentioned that his decision will depend on his physical condition and whether the Jets are interested in retaining him. "You want to be in a spot where you feel like you can win and you're valued," Rodgers commented, acknowledging that he is enduring one of the toughest statistical seasons of his career.
The decision, however, may not entirely rest with Rodgers. The Jets, currently 3-8, have dismissed head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, ushering in a new regime for the 2025 season. The incoming leadership might decide to part ways with Rodgers, who is under contract for 2025 but without guaranteed money. They could potentially elevate current backup Tyrod Taylor or select a highly drafted rookie as their starting quarterback.
Rodgers used his platform on the show to refute reports, including one by The Athletic, suggesting he wants to play in 2025 but not with the Jets. "That's 100% false," he asserted, adding that he's "not jumping off the ship."
Despite his denial, Rodgers' uncertainty about his future playing career has stirred the waters. When asked two weeks ago about his plans for 2025, Rodgers gave a lukewarm "Yeah, I think so" response. Since then, the Jets' season has continued to falter, culminating in a crushing last-minute defeat to the Indianapolis Colts and the firing of Douglas.
Rodgers previously considered retirement after the 2022 season but decided to continue following a reflective period known as his "darkness retreat." The Green Bay Packers subsequently traded him to the Jets in April 2023, with Rodgers aiming to provide "two good seasons" for the team. Unfortunately, his 2023 campaign was cut short after just four snaps due to a ruptured left Achilles, and he quipped that this season hasn't been ideal either.
"When you're 40, going on 41, you're obviously at the end of your career," Rodgers reflected. "... If it's New York, they have to want me to be here. And then the new GM, new staff all have to want me to be with the Jets. And then body-wise, I have to see how I'm feeling and if I want to sign up to go back to the grind and all that. But it feels good. I'm healthy now.
"It's not as much fun when you're dealing with rehab all the time. So, if I can stay healthy the rest of the year and play the way I want to play, and everybody feels good about bringing me back, then there's a decision there. And if not, then there's all the other options. I think, at this point, I'm open to everything and attached to nothing. So, it's a good place to be."
